Count Duckula is a British animated series from 1988 to 1993 and an offshoot of the Danger Mouse series . The hero of the series is the count of the same name, a vegetarian vampire duck and Dracula parody .

Count Duckula is a vampire of the "hideous race of wicked vampire ducks, the Count Duckula", who can only be resuscitated every hundred years by a secret ritual when the moon is in the Eighth House of Aquarius , when they are exposed to glaring sunlight or a stake in the heart was killed. When the current Count Duckula was resuscitated, something went wrong: instead of “ the blood of bat wings ”, ketchup was accidentally used in the resuscitation broth, and to the horror of his faithful butler Igor, Duckula was born as a vegetarian vampire who preferred broccoli sandwiches instead of the life juice of other beings eaten.
This prehistory is crucial for understanding all Duckula episodes, as Igor tries in every episode to turn the young count back into a real vampire duck, against which he defends himself with skin and feathers.
Housekeeper Emma completes the Trio Infernale; a decisive bearer of the comedy in the Duckula episodes, who breaks through all doors with her bandaged arm out of disgust instead of opening them normally. Of a good-natured character, in her stupidity she often enough gives the brightly colored, fantastic stories the actual twist into the completely grotesque .

- Count Duckula (Count Duckula) is the vegetarian, somewhat idiot and eccentric youngest incarnation of an immortal vampire booby. He travels around the world with his teleportable Duckula Castle. His German voice is given to him by Ilja Richter .
- Igor (a vulture), Duckula's devoted butler, desperately tries to drive out the broccoli sandwiches from his master and turn him into a "real" vampire. Donald Arthur speaks Igor in the German version. The character is an allusion to Igor, a character from the Frankenstein films, in which he is Dr. Frankenstein is.
- Emma (nanny) (a chicken), the housekeeper, causes all sorts of difficulties with her lovable, idiot nature, but sometimes (accidentally) saves the day. She always calls Duckula Duckiputz . Hartmut Neugebauer speaks Emma in the German version.
- Doctor von Gänseklein (Dr. Von Goosewing) is a scientist and passionate vampire hunter who simply cannot be convinced that Duckula is really a vegetarian. He sächselt in the German episodes in which he is dubbed by Jochen Busse . His ingenious plans to finish off the undead always fail in spite of everything, mostly when he asks his imaginary or deceased colleague Heinrich for help. Von Gänseklein is a parody of Abraham van Helsing .
- The landlord (The Chef) runs the inn Zum bloutigen Zahnzahn , which is located at the foot of Duckula Castle. It is dubbed by Wolfgang Völz .
- The crows brothers (The Crowbrothers) as Dr. von Gänseklein opponent of Count Duckula. This quartet tries again and again to steal antiques from the castle, but they never succeed. The leader of the Crow Brothers was initially dubbed by Jan Fedder , later by Tommi Piper .

The series had 65 episodes between 1988 and 1993. It was produced by Cosgrove-Hall Productions by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall.
The jokes and word games in the series are not always accessible to children and young people, but this means that adults can laugh at a lot too.
The explanation for the fundamentally different character traits of the Count in Danger Mouse and in this spin-off is the fact that in Danger Mouse he was exposed to sunlight and had turned to dust. So when Count Duckula tells of the Count's father, the Count from Danger Mouse is meant.
Radio plays
Count Duckula was also produced as a radio play series by Europe , but not all episodes (24 in total). On each cassette there are two episodes that are told by Günter Flesch.
DVD
The series was released on DVD in a Universal Collector's Box. The total running time of all episodes is 1440 minutes. However, the last 13 episodes that were edited by another dubbing studio are missing on the DVD. In addition, the DVDs only contain the German soundtrack and no extras or subtitles.
