Gran Concepción ( German  Groß-Concepción ), officially Intercomuna Concepción-Talcahuano , is the second largest metropolitan area in Chile with around 1.1 million inhabitants , after Greater Santiago ( región Metropolitana de Santiago ) with around 8 million inhabitants. The update of the population by the National Institute for Statistics ( Spanish Instituto Nacional de Estadística, INE ) resulted in a figure of 1,083,043 inhabitants for Gran Concepción in 2012.

The metropolitan area owes its name to the city of Concepción , the capital of the Región del Bío-Bío .
