The Gran Piedra ( Spanish for large stone ) is a characteristic monolith in eastern Cuba, east of the city of Santiago de Cuba . At 1225 meters, it forms the highest point of the Cordillera de la Gran Piedra named after it . This mountain range belongs to the eastern, smaller part of the Sierra Maestra .

With its dimensions of 51 meters in length, 25 meters in height and 30 meters in width, the rock is one of the largest monoliths in the world. It has an estimated weight of more than 63 thousand tons.

The Gran Piedra is located in Baconao Park , a UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve .

The vegetation around the Gran Piedra is - depending on the elevation - characterized by evergreen mountain rainforest and partly cloud forest.

tourism

The panoramic view over the surrounding mountain ranges is interesting for tourists . The access to the viewpoint ( mirador ) is well developed, but can only be reached on foot via 452 steps.

Within sight of the rock is the Cafetal La Isabélica, a historic plantation of French coffee producers from the early 19th century. The manor house, the ruins of the farm buildings and slave accommodation are now accessible as a museum. They are (together with other coffee plantations in the south-east of Cuba) on the UNESCO World Heritage List .
