history

Grand River Enterprises was founded in 1992 by several Mohawks in the Six Nations of the Grand River Indian reservation in Ontario, Canada . It was named after the Grand River , a river that flows through the reserve to Lake Erie . In order to expand into the European market, the company decided to set up a production facility in Germany for 50 million euros . Rietz in the municipality of Kloster Lehnin was chosen as the location for the factory . Around a quarter of the total investment was covered by subsidies from the state of Brandenburg, for example . After starting production in 2006 with 40 to 50 employees, the company grew rapidly. In 2007 the plant in Rietz was one of fewer than twenty production sites for the tobacco industry in Germany. In 2010, sales including tobacco tax were over 570 million euros. Since 2011, this tax is no longer shown in the operating result in the cost of materials, but previously offset against sales. Sales excluding tobacco tax were 33 million euros in 2011 and 31 million euros in 2012. Including the tobacco tax, the gross proceeds amounted to 450 and 362 million euros respectively. The directors of Grand River Entersprises are the directors Jerry Montour and Kenneth Hill. In 2014 there were around 290 employees in the company. The following year 2015 saw the first major layoffs at Grand River Enterprises.
