Occurrence

The awn shield fern occurs in Europe, North Africa, Canary Islands, Asia Minor, and the Caucasus. In Europe in the southern and southwestern part, northwards to England and Ireland, in Germany reaching the northeastern border of the distribution: Sauerland, Odenwald, Main area near Obernburg, Black Forest, neighboring in northern Switzerland (Rheinfelden) and in the Vosges (southern Vosges to northern Vosges near Zabern : Zinseltal).

The awn shield fern grows on shaded, fresh (to moderately moist), partially slightly percolated, mostly alkaline, but low-lime, weakly acidic clay soils , mostly on steep, sometimes also rubble-rich slopes in a damp location, preferably at creek cuttings , mostly in beeches rich in ferns - or less often in beech-fir forests. It thrives in the Galio-Fagetum, in societies of the Carpinion Union or the Fagetalia order.
