On January 10, 2011, Grantham was the victim of a major flood disaster, which in Queensland from the end of 2010 to mid-January 2011 also led to considerable destruction in other places. 12 people lost their lives and numerous houses and buildings were destroyed. Almost the entire village was destroyed and razed to the ground by the flash flood. After the flood, several high-ranking politicians visited the community, including Queensland Prime Minister Anna Bligh and Australia's Governor General Quentin Bryce
In May 2011 it was announced that the destroyed parts of the city could be rebuilt at a higher point. A plot of land was made available by the government, where landowners could voluntarily exchange an area of the same size. The government simplified the approval process for the relevant building projects.
