Granville Beynon

Sir Granville Beynon (born May 24, 1914 in Dunvant , Wales , † March 11, 1996 in Aberystwyth ) was one of the most important organizers of the International Geophysical Year 1957/58. Against resistance, he later pushed through the successful European radar project EISCAT .

After his education from 1946 to 1958 at the University of Swansea , he taught from 1958 to 1991 as a professor at the University of Aberystwyth . Closely associated with Edward Appleton , the discoverer of the ionosphere , he has held positions in important international projects: President of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) 1972–75, of EISCAT, the "Year of the Calm Sun". 1973 Beynon became a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 1976 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor .

Beynon had been married to Megan James since 1942 and had two sons and a daughter.
