The Grass River is a 500 km long left tributary of the Nelson River in the Canadian province of Manitoba .
The Grass River has its origin in the lake system of the Cranberry Lakes not far from the border with Saskatchewan . He leaves Third Cranberry Lake at its eastern end. The Grass River flows mainly in an east-northeast direction through the lake landscape of the Canadian Shield . There are numerous lakes and river broadenings along the river, including: Elbow Lake , Iskwasum Lake , Loucks Lake , Flag Lake , Reed Lake , Wekusko Lake , Setting Lake , Paint Lake , Natawahunan Lake , Bald Eagle Lake , Teal Lake, and Witchal Lake . In between, the river overcomes several rapids and waterfalls. Grass River Provincial Park is located on the upper reaches of Reed Lake . Above Wekusko Lake are the Wekusko Falls in the Wekusko Falls Provincial Park . The Manitoba Provincial Road 392 at this point leads over the river, 10 km further north site Snow Lake . Below Setting Lake is the Sasagiu Rapids Provincial Park on the river . Here the Manitoba Highway 6 crosses the Grass River. 7.5 km downstream is Pisew Falls in Pisew Falls Provincial Park . Another 12 km downstream, the Grass River overcomes the Kwasitchewan Falls . Paint Lake is located 20 km south of the city of Thompson in Paint Lake Provincial Park on the river. The Grass River finally flows into the Nelson River below the Kelsey hydropower station . The catchment area of the Grass River covers approximately 15,900 km². The mean discharge at the gauge above Standing Stone Falls , 62 km above the mouth, is 64.9 m³ / s. The highest monthly outflows usually occur in July.
Fish fauna
In the river system of the Grass River, the following fish species are found, among others: pike , glass-eyed perch , American char , herring vendace and American perch .
