The Gray Leaf Funkie ( Hosta 'Fortunei') is a Japanese hybrid family from the genus Funkie ( Hosta ) in the family of the Agavaceae (Agavaceae).

The gray-leaf funkie is a perennial herbaceous rhizome plant that reaches heights of 40 to 70 (rarely up to 95) centimeters. The stem is significantly longer than the leaf rosette. The leaf blade measures 10 to 20 (rarely up to 30) × 5 to 11 (20) centimeters. It has 8 to 10 pairs of lateral nerves and its upper side is only lightly or not blue-green. The flower stalk has a length of about 35 centimeters, is winged and deeply rutted. The flowers are light purple.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The gray-leaf funkie is a Japanese hybrid clan, the origin of which is unclear. One of the parents may be the blue-leaf hosta ( Hosta Sieboldiana ).

use

The gray-leaf host is widely used as an ornamental plant for shady perennial beds. It has been in culture since 1875 at the latest, possibly since 1866.

Important varieties are:

  • Large white-bordered Funkia 'Fortunei Obscura': The stem is 50 to 95 centimeters long. The leaf blade reaches up to 30 × 16 centimeters and is egg-shaped, pointed and edged with white in different widths.
  • Spring gold funkie 'Fortunei Aurea': The leaves are slightly wrinkled when they shoot, golden yellow and slightly green.
  • Yellow green-bordered Funkia 'Fortunei Albopicta': The leaf margin is dark green, the center of the leaf is golden yellow.
  • Green gold-rimmed hosta 'Fortunei Aureomarginate': The leaf blade is dark green and has a broad yellow edge.
  • Hyacinth Funkia 'Fortunei Hyacinthina': The plant reaches heights of 50 to 70 centimeters. The leaf blade is slightly wrinkled and sea green. Their underside is frosted white. It has 8 to 9 pairs of nerves. The flowers are deep purple. The bracts are large, stiff, and purple in color.
