The blue-leaf Funkia ( Hosta Sieboldiana ) is a species of the genus Funkien ( Hosta ) in the subfamily of the Agave family (Agavoideae).

features

The blue-leaf funkie is a perennial herbaceous plant with a short rhizome that reaches heights of 50 to 70 centimeters. The stem protrudes only slightly beyond the leaf rosette. The top of the leaves is distinctly blue-green, the leaf blade measures 26 to 35 (50) × 14 to 23 (30) centimeters, and there are 11 to 14 (18) pairs of lateral nerves. The petiole is up to 60 centimeters long and wingless.

The flowers are up to 5.5 centimeters long and light purple in color. The perigone tips have hardly been turned back.

The flowering period extends from June to July, sometimes also to August.

Occurrence

The blue-leaf funkie occurs in Japan on Honshū in the Hokuriku and North Kinki districts. Here it probably grows in rocky mountain forests.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Hosta Sieboldiana var. Glabra N. Fujita : It occurs on Honshu and the Oki Islands .
  • Hosta Sieboldiana var. Sieboldiana : Originally only found in Japan.

use

The blue-leaf funkie is widely used as an ornamental plant for partially shaded borders and wooded borders. It has been in culture since 1830 at the latest.

There are a few varieties, for example:

  • Permanent gold funkie - 'Semperaurea': The leaves are yellow-green.
  • Large blue-leaf funkie - 'Elegans': The leaves are rounder, more blue-gray in color, wrinkled and pointed shorter. This variety is widely used as an ornamental plant. Synonyms are Hosta 'Fortunei' × Hosta Sieboldiana , Hosta 'Fortunei Robusta' and Hosta Sieboldiana var. Elegans Hyl.
  • Blue Yellow Funkia - 'Frances Williams': The leaves are blue-green, wrinkled and have an irregular yellow margin.
  • Spoon-leaf Funkie - 'Tokudama': The leaves are heart-shaped, round and pointed, the stem is 20 to 35 centimeters long and the leaf edge is spoon-shaped upwards. The stem is barely higher than the leaves. The flowering time is in June, sometimes in July. A synonym is Hosta tokudama F.Maek.
  • Spotted Spoon-Leaf Funkia - 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa': This variety is very similar to 'Tokudama' but grows faster and its leaves have a yellow spot in the center.
  • 'Amplissima': The clumps are dense and large-leaved, the flower cluster is horizontal.
  • 'Hypophylla': The leaves are more or less round. The flower stems are short and do not protrude beyond the leaves.
