GrazMuseum in the Palais Khuenburg

The GrazMuseum , formerly Stadtmuseum Graz , at Sackstraße 18 is the cultural and historical museum of the Austrian city of Graz . Its collections and exhibitions deal with the city's past and present. The historical collection and permanent exhibition “360 GRAZ | The city of all times ”shows the political, economic and social history of the city of Graz. The museum is located in the baroque Palais Khuenburg , where the Austrian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este was born in 1863 .

history

The city museum was founded in 1928 on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of Graz by the city administration, the Landesmuseum Joanneum , the Karl-Franzens-University , the Technical University and the Styrian State Archives as the historical museum of the city of Graz. It was not until ten years after its founding - collection objects were previously packed in boxes in inadequate depots and in rooms in the town hall - that exhibition rooms in the Palais Attems at Sackstrasse 17 were made available to the museum in 1938 . In 1951 it became part of the Landesmuseum Joanneum and moved to Schloss Eggenberg , but in 1969 it returned to the city center and the municipality. The exhibits at that time consisted of historical objects and art objects from the city, plus purchases and donations.

After 44 years of temporary spatial arrangements, the City Museum finally found its place in Palais Khuenburg at Sackstrasse 18 in 1972. In addition to providing comprehensive information on the city's history - building on the permanent collection that opened in 1982 - efforts were made to resume the previously rather modest collection activities. Under the direction of Gerhard M. Dienes, who ran the museum for 15 years, the house was modernized between 1995 and 1997 and with exhibitions such as “Water”, “trans local. Nine Cities on the Net ”and“ The Laws of the Father ”put the focus on special exhibitions.

In 2005, under the direction of Otto Hochreiter, the museum was spun off from municipal administration to Stadtmuseum Graz GmbH. Even after the spin-off, the institution is wholly owned by the City of Graz. The former Graz City Museum became the GrazMuseum in autumn 2012, which was recognized far beyond the regional borders. In 2014 it was one of the nominated museums for the European Museum of the Year Award .

Permanent exhibition “360 GRAZ | The city of all times "

The historical collection and permanent exhibition “360 GRAZ | The city of all times ”shows the political, economic and social history of the city of Graz in an open form. The history of Graz is presented in this thematically and chronologically arranged display depot. The construction of history in "360 GRAZ " asks questions and illuminates them from different perspectives: from the European, from that of urban development or that of gender history.

"360 GRAZ | The City of All Times “is divided into four epochal themes: 1. The closed city from 1128 to 1600. 2. The open city from 1600 to 1809. 3. The exploding city from 1809 to 1914. 4. The suburbanized city from 1914 til today.
