Robert Meeraus (born October 14, 1899 in Trieste , † December 9, 1944 in a POW camp in Trolov near Stalingrad ) was an Austrian art historian .

Life

After graduating from high school in Graz, Robert Meeraus studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Graz , where he received his doctorate in 1925 under Hermann Egger . From 1925 to 1929 he initially worked as an unpaid librarian at the Art History Institute of the University of Graz. He was largely responsible for the cityscape exhibition on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the city of Graz in October 1929, after which the City Museum Graz was founded. Meeraus became the first director of this museum in 1929 and was also the city's archivist and librarian (until 1937). After a large part of the museum only existed in the depot, he was able to put a large part of the holdings in the Palais Attems in 1938 , which was opened on August 1, 1939. In November 1940 Robert Meeraus was called up for military service. His successor in the management of the museum took over in 1941 Fritz Klabinus .
