Graziano Delrio (born April 27, 1960 in Reggio nell'Emilia ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD). He was mayor of his hometown from 2004 to 2013, then State Secretary and Minister of the Italian Government. From April 2, 2015 to June 1, 2018, he was Minister for Infrastructure and Transport .

Life

Delrio completed a medical degree at the University of Modena and then specialized in endocrinology . He was a professor at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia .

As a member of the Christian Democratic Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI), he moved to Reggio Emilia City Council in 1999. The following year he was elected to the regional parliament of the Emilia-Romagna region , where he headed the Health and Social Committee. The PPI was part of the Democrazia è Libertà - La Margherita party in 2002 . In June 2004, Delrio won the mayoral election of Reggio Emilia as a candidate for the center-left alliance L'Ulivo in the first round with 63%. This made him the first non-communist mayor in this traditionally “red” city since 1945 (although he was also supported by the successor parties of the PCI as part of the L'Ulivo alliance ). In June 2009 he was confirmed in this office , meanwhile a member of the Partito Democratico - again in the first ballot with 52.5% of the votes. In 2011 he succeeded Sergio Chiamparino at the head of the Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI).

On April 28, 2013, Delrio became Minister for Regional Affairs in the Letta cabinet , and from the following June 26, he was also given responsibility for sports . In the Renzi cabinet , he took over the post of the highest-ranking State Secretary in the Prime Minister's office on February 22, 2014 , making him Matteo Renzi's most important employee . After the resignation of Infrastructure and Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi , he took over his office on April 2, 2015. In the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2018 , Delrio won a direct mandate for the Chamber of Deputies in the constituency of his hometown .

Delrio married his wife Anna Maria when he was 22. They have five daughters and four sons.
