Great sugar loaf
The Great Sugar Loaf ( Irish Ó Cualann ) is a mountain in the east of County Wicklow in Ireland .
geography
The mountain is located between the towns of Delgany and Kilmacanogue north of the Glen of the Downs nature reserve . The smaller Little Sugar Loaf is east of it.
The Great Sugarloaf is only 501 m high. Because it protrudes from its surroundings with its volcano-like appearance, it is a prominent point in the landscape.
geology
While the Wicklow Mountains to the west are made of granite from the Devonian Age , the Great Sugarloaf is made of quartz that was formed during the Cambrian . Although it is occasionally viewed as an extinct volcano, it is made up of sedimentary deposits from the deep sea that have not been weathered.
Trivia
On a clear day, Snowdon in Wales can be seen from its top, 150 km away .
