Greenwoodochromis is a genus of cichlids that is endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa.

features

Greenwoodochromis species are 15 to 23.5 cm long, have moderately high-backed, laterally strongly flattened bodies and a sloping, upward-pointing mouth. They are of a brownish basic color and can show some dark, broad, vertical stripes on the sides of the body. Diagnostic features of the genus are the large, sensory pores on the large first ring of the eye (infraorbitalia). The Greenwoodochromis species have a total of four to six infraorbitalia, depending on the species. The foremost bone is larger than the others and has five to six pores. Four of these pores are relatively large, larger than the distance between them. The other infraorbitalia each usually have two, more rarely up to five, sensory pores. The pores are small and the distance between them is smaller than most of the other cichlids found in Lake Tanganyika. The species in the genus Trematocara also have large pores on the first infraorbitalia, but in this genus all pores are large, not just four.

Systematics

The genus Greenwoodochromis was introduced in 1983 by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll . Type species is Limnochromis christyi . In addition, Greenwoodochromis bellcrossi (originally Hemibates bellcrossi ) was assigned to the genus. The genus was named in honor of the English ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood . Two other species from the genus Limnochromis were placed in the genus Greenwoodochromis in 2014 after they had been newly diagnosed. In addition, the tribe Greenwoodochromini, in which the Greenwoodochromis was previously placed, was synonymous with Limnochromini . Greenwoodochromis thus has four species, while Limnochromis is monotypical with Limnochromis auritus as the remaining species .
