Gregor Haloander

Gregor Haloander (* 1501 in Zwickau as Gregor Meltzer , † September 7, 1531 in or near Venice , Italy ) was a German lawyer at the beginning of the 16th century .

Haloander studied at the University of Leipzig from 1521 , devoted himself to studies in Zeitz during the years of the Peasant Wars of 1524/25 and went to Italy at the end of 1525, where he studied the writings on Justinian's Corpus Juris .

In 1527 he returned to Germany and oversaw the printing of the digest text (littera Haloandrina) which he had prepared and which appeared in three volumes in Nuremberg in 1529 under the title "Digestorum seu Pandectarum libri quinquaginta". Haloander moved to Venice, Ferrara and Bologna in 1531 with the consent of the council of the city of Nuremberg, which he financially supported and with the consent of the council of the city of Zwickau, to which he was accountable, and died in Venice on Sept. 7, 1531 due to medical malpractice.

Haloander's merit is the dissemination of Roman legal texts in Germany. Haloander made a name for himself in particular in the source criticism by emphasizing the meaning of the original text of the Pandects, the Codex Florentinus (so-called " Littera Florentina "), which he himself only knew from unreliable copies.

Haloander's review of Justinian's “ institutions ”, also published in Nuremberg in 1529 , was received in German territory after his death. Haloander's edition of 1531 only partially edited the Justinian novellas . This work was ultimately reserved for Heinrich Scrimger (1506–1572).

Haloander's source editions, however, also meant that the consolidation of the textual basis of the entire Corpus Juris Civilis he was striving for was temporarily not achieved. This only happened through the editions of Dionysius Gothofredus that had been published since 1583 .
