Weaving machines in the VEB Greika

The Greika was a state-owned enterprise (VEB) in the Thuringian town of Greiz in the GDR . It was a textile company that consisted of several factories, all with two exceptions being located in or near Greiz. The acronym Greika originated in 1953 from the previously common name for VEB Greizer Kammgarn - weaving mill . VEB Greika existed until the end of 1990 and was part of the "Wool and Silk" combine based in Meerane .

history

In the course of the expropriation of the first textile companies in Greiz in autumn 1945, they were placed under trust management. Most were then briefly run as a state-owned company (LEB). In 1948/1949 these were then converted into state- owned companies . By 1950, four of the biggest worsted weaving (formerly crumbs, Arnold Langenwetzendorf, S. Schwarz & Sohn, Zirnite & club-shaped) in the VEB Greizer worsted weaving together, as of 1 January 1953, the name was changed to VEB Greika that only these four companies to 31 March 1970 retained. On April 1, 1970, the operations in Greiz and the surrounding area were restructured, including those previously known as VEB Textilwerke Record / VEB Textilia, VEB Novotex , VEB Seidenweberei Pausa, Weida, Berga and Creuzburg, VEB Textilveredlung, VEB Textilveredlungswerke, VEB Kammgarnzwirnerei , VEB Garnveredlung, VEB Webtex as well as the VEB clothing weaving mill, VEB cap liners and the central vocational school, the data center, etc. were incorporated. According to the list below, this VEB Greika existed until May 15, 1990 and was then converted into a GmbH. Individual businesses were then outsourced, sold or placed under trust management.

In 1990 Greika GmbH was founded with 3500 employees. After the first wave of layoffs, Greika GmbH had 600 employees in 1992 and only around 200 in 1996. The bearer of hope was an investor from India, who soon turned out to be a fraud. The traditional textile industry ended on April 1st, 1997 with the complete execution of the bankrupt Greika GmbH. As in many other places, the years that followed were marked by decay and demolition of the buildings - as was the case for many other industrial companies in Greiz and the surrounding area .
