Grendel (Saint Catherine's)

Grendel is a part of the local community Sankt Katharinen in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Neuwied .

geography

The hamlet of Grendel is 345  m above sea level. NHN on the east side of Landesstraße 254 ( Kretzhaus –Weißfeld) between Hargarten in the north and Ginsterhahn in the south. In terms of natural space, the village within the Niederwesterwald can be assigned to the Rheinwesterwälder volcanic ridge , but is located at the transition to the Rhein-Wied ridge . The terrain slopes down to the east towards the Brochenbach .

history

Grendel goes back to a farm that first appeared after 1700. As part of the Linzer Höhe, it was under the administration of the Electoral Cologne Office of Linz until the beginning of the 19th century . Since 1809 the homestead belonged to the then newly formed Hargarten community , from 1816 in the administrative district of the Linz mayor's office . In censuses in the first half of the 19th century it was recorded as Grendels-Hof , in 1843 it comprised a residential and four farm buildings . Grendel did not grow beyond its then size until the middle of the 20th century.

Towards the end of the Second World War , the court , which was considered strategically important, was on 10/11. Set on fire by SS troops in March 1945 and largely destroyed. Today Grendel comprises four to five houses or house numbers .
