Gretchen Daily

Gretchen Cara Daily (born October 19, 1964 in Washington, DC ) is an American ecologist and professor at Stanford University . She is one of the leading representatives of the ecosystem service approach.

Life and research

Daily did her BS , MS and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University. Her dissertation from 1992 was entitled Interactions between populations and resources .

Her research relates to the biogeographical relationships between the future development of ecosystems and their dynamics. It tries to harmonize biodiversity protection and agricultural development and to find common ways for decision makers in terms of sustainable development. Gretchen Daily co-founded the Natural Capital Project , which aims to encourage various stakeholders to act together on nature conservation issues.

Daily is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 2003), the US National Academy of Sciences (since 2005) and the American Philosophical Society (since 2008), on the boards of the Stockholm Resilience Center and the Nature Conservancy . She is winner of the Heinz Award 2010 and the Volvo Environment Prize 2012. In 2017 she received the Blue Planet Prize together with Hans Joachim Schellnhuber . For 2018 she was awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award and for 2020 the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement .
