Grete Bittner

Grete Bittner (born April 20, 1905 in Krakow ; † January 1, 1973 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) was an Austrian folk actress .

Life

Grete Bittner was a student of Max Reinhardt and worked as an actress in Vienna, Germany and Switzerland before 1939. In 1940 Grete Bittner met the actor and singer Josef Liszt . In 1941 their daughter Gisela Matzer was born. In 1944 Grete Bittner came to Klagenfurt, where she worked for 25 years as a teacher and two years as school director. As a member of the “Notgemeinschaft”, she helped put the Klagenfurt City Theater back into operation after the war and was also active as an actress, director and senior stage director. Due to her versatile artistic talent, she shaped the drama division at this house for many years.

She also worked for the Austrian radio . Grete Bittner fought for women's rights and was the president of the Carinthian women's union and co-founder of the mother and child home in the Klagenfurt regional hospital.

Grete Bittner was awarded the " Golden Cross of Merit of the Republic of Austria " and the " Golden Cross of Merit for Art and Science ".

Grete Bittner died on January 1, 1973 in Klagenfurt and was buried in the St. Martin cemetery in Klagenfurt.
