Gretl Aicher

Gretl Aicher (born July 9, 1928 in Salzburg ; † March 14, 2012 there ) was an Austrian puppeteer and theater director .

Life

At the age of 16, Gretl Aicher began playing puppets at the Salzburg Marionette Theater founded in 1913 by her grandfather Anton Aicher . In 1944 and 1945 she attended the state master school for carving, painting and stage design. At the beginning of the 1950s, Aicher gradually took over the management of individual areas within the theater, such as lighting control from 1952, theater tailoring from 1965 and responsibility for the stage from 1967. After the death of her father Hermann Aicher, who had taken over the theater after the death of Anton Aicher, she managed the entire company from 1977 until the end.

Under Gretl Aicher's aegis, the Salzburg Marionette Theater also made a name for itself internationally, and from 1991 went on guest tours to New York, Paris and Tokyo. A number of new productions such as Così fan tutte , Hoffmann's Stories and A Midsummer Night's Dream also fell during her time as director . Aicher intensified the collaboration with well-known directors such as Götz Friedrich and joint productions with the Salzburg State Theater and the Salzburg Festival emerged.

Aicher, who received several awards, was unmarried and remained childless. In 2010 she was part of the documentary series We are dedicated to Austria . Gretl Aicher died unexpectedly of heart failure at the age of 83, standing in the rehearsals for Der Ring des Nibelungen .

Furthermore, Gretl Aicher was the holder of the Golden Decoration of Honor of the market town of Mattsee and an honorary citizen of Nashville.
