The Greek Gymnasium Fener ( Turkish Özel Fener Rum Lisesi ) is the oldest existing secondary Greek school in Istanbul .

History and present

Founded in 1454 by Gennadios Scholarios as the "Great School of the Nation" ( Greek Μεγάλη του Γένους Σχολή Megáli toú Genous Scholí ), it soon became the school of the prominent Greek ( Phanarioten ) and Bulgarian families in the Ottoman Empire and numerous Ottoman ministers such as for example Dimitrie Cantemir went to school here. The first rector was Matthaios Kamariotis, a scholar of the Renaissance era from Saloniki .

The current school building is located next to the Cathedral of St. George in the Fener district , which is the seat of the Patriarchate . It is known by the local population as "The Red Castle" or "The Red School".

Designed by the Ottoman-Greek architect Konstantinos Dimadis , the building was expanded between 1881 and 1883 with a mixture of different style elements, for a price of 17,210 Ottoman gold pounds, a high sum for this era. The money was from Georgios Zariphis provided, a Greek-Ottoman banker and financier who to Istanbul community of Rûm counted. Despite being used as a school, the building was often referred to as "the fifth largest castle in Europe" - because of its castle-like shape. The large dome at the top of the building is used as an observatory for astronomy classes and contains a large telescope .

Today the school is the second largest after the Zoğrafyon Gymnasium and has 15 Greek teachers and six Turkish teachers. Due to the law, the school applies the Turkish curriculum in addition to the Greek subjects (Greek language, literature and religion).

A well-known personality is Neofytos Vamvas .
