Grigol Tsereteli
Grigol Tsereteli ( Georgia გრიგოლ წერეთელი ; born March 12, jul. / 24. March 1870 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire , † 1938 in Tbilisi , Soviet Union ) was a Georgian philologist . He was one of the founders of papyrology and the Georgian School of Classical Philology .
Life
Grigol Tsereteli was born in 1870 as the son of a lawyer from a noble family. From 1888 to 1893 he completed an ancient philology degree at the University of Saint Petersburg . His thesis dealt with the history of Greek shorthand .
Tsereteli became a lecturer at the St. Petersburg Archaeological Institute . In 1897 he moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin as an assistant professor , where he became one of the founders of papyrology. In 1902 he returned to Saint Petersburg and obtained his doctorate in 1905. phil. the classical philologist and in the same year became head of the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Dorpat , Estonia , where he obtained his second doctorate (Dr. sci.).
In 1914, Tsereteli took over the management of the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Saint Petersburg and in 1917 became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . In 1918 he became a professor at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin, but in 1920 he accepted a call to head the Department of Classical Philology at the newly founded State University of Tbilisi , where he also held the position of director of the university library from 1923 to 1931. In 1935 Tsereteli was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of Georgia .
Tsereteli had been a member of the German Society for Papyrology since 1919 and a member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1927 . He has published more than 90 scientific papers in Russian and German, including ten monographs, on papyrology, classical philology and the history of ancient Greek literature.
In the course of the Great Terror , Tsereteli was arrested by the NKVD in 1937. In 1938 he died in prison and was buried in the Pantheon on Mtatsminda in Tbilisi.
The University Library of Tbilisi State University now bears his name.
