Grita Insam

Grita Insam (born March 13, 1939 in Vienna ; † June 3, 2012 there ) was an Austrian gallery owner and was considered one of the most important sponsors of contemporary art in Austria.

Life

Insam studied advertising and market research and then founded an agency. As an advertising specialist, she designed a campaign with several artists for the Prinzhorn paper company (Hamburger-Mosburger) in 1969/70 . She commented on this with "I was suddenly in the art scene - and then I didn't want to leave" and then founded the Modern Art Gallery in 1971 with partner Am Hof in Vienna's 1st district . After disputing the content, she separated from her partners and opened her own gallery in 1974 in Wipplingerstraße, also in the 1st district of Vienna, and moved three years later to Köllnerhofgasse. In 2005 she opened her third gallery location An der Hülben . Insam closed her gallery in November 2011 for health reasons. The last exhibition was dedicated to the artist collective Art & Language ( Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden ).

In 2009 Insam was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art for her work “as one of the pioneers in the communication and promotion of contemporary art in Vienna” by the Minister of Culture Claudia Schmied .

Insam fought cancer for years and had a stroke shortly before Christmas 2011 , from which she died on the night of March 3rd / 4th. June 2012 suffered.
