The Great Ice Cave in Paradana (Velika ledena jama v Paradani) is a cave in Predmeja in the Paradana Nature Reserve in the Ternovski Forest (Trnovski gozd) in the Goriška region in Slovenia , which has ice all year round.
location
The cave is located on the wooded karst plateau above the Vipava valley northwest of Ajdovščina . There is another ice cave nearby, the Mala ledena jama (small ice cave).
Characteristics
The ice cave is accessible via a mouth hole at around 1100 m above sea level , which can be reached from the road via a 10-minute walk. The sinkhole is known for the inversion of the vegetation levels (vegetation reversal). The cave is about 650 m deep; its length is given as 4090 m.
history
Ice was extracted from the cave for the city of Trieste . The ice was in mining means mined manner and in blocks of 10 to 40 kg transported at night to Trieste, where it was used to cool the fishing on fishing vessels. It is also said to have been exported to Egypt in the 19th century. The inversion of the vegetation levels was first described in 1905.
