The great mute insect ( Arcyptera fusca ) is a short-antennae insect from the family of field locusts (Acrididae).

features

With 23 to 36 millimeters (males) and 29 to 40 millimeters (females) in length, the animals are relatively large for Central European field locusts. They have a yellowish to olive-green base color and have yellow and black markings. The red splints (tibiae) of the hind legs are characteristic . They have a yellow ring at the base and an equally colored ring directly on the black knee. The front wings are striped yellow, the tips are black-brown in color, just like the entire hind wings. The fore wings of the males are so long that when folded they protrude a little over the abdomen. The wings of the females are shortened and the lateral keel of the pronotum is straighter than in the male.

Occurrence

This grasshopper species lives in the subalpine mountain forests of the Alps and Pyrenees up to a height of about 1,000 meters on dry, little overgrown mountain meadows and heaths . It used to be found in large parts of southern Germany, but is now only known from the Swabian Alb . That is why they are in the Red List of the FRG: listed as 1 (threatened with extinction).

Way of life and song

The females cannot fly, the males, on the other hand, are good fliers and produce a soft snarling in flight. After landing, a strong “rä” can usually be heard, as they briefly stroke the wings with their hind legs. In order to woo females, this sound is produced several times in combination with a whirring sound, for example as "rä-tschschsch-rä-rä".
