Belgrade Grand Prix 1939
The Belgrade Grand Prix , also known as the Yugoslav Grand Prix in various sources , was the last Grand Prix race of the 1930s.
run
The only Grand Prix of Belgrade took place on September 3, 1939, two days after the start of the Second World War . On the same day the governments of France and Great Britain declared war on the German Reich . After the training runs on September 1st, when news reached Belgrade that the war had broken out, most of the teams wanted to leave. The organizer managed to persuade some to stay, so that a race could take place two days later. Five vehicles were at the start, four of which crossed the finish line and only three were classified.
The 2.790 km long route led through Kalemegdan Park in the middle of Belgrade. In practice, the German Manfred von Brauchitsch set the fastest time, who started the race from pole position on the day of the race and crossed the finish line in second. The victory went to Tazio Nuvolari , who was the last winner of an international European motorsport event until 1946.
