The Große Spektesee ( pronunciation ? / I ) is a former gravel pond and part of the Spektegrünzug in the Berlin district of Falkenhagener Feld in the Spandau district . Audio file / audio sample

description

The name of the lake was derived from the Spekte , which once originated as a small stream in the wetlands of the Havelland and flowed into the Havel near Spandau . In the 1960s, gravel was mined in the area for the extraction of building materials . As a result, the Spektelake and, in 1984, the Große Spektesee were created along the Specta Low. This was used as a gravel pond until 1978. The lakes were integrated into a green corridor as part of a renaturation with funds from compensation payments from Deutsche Bahn in 2003.

The lake is around seven hectares and up to 11.9 meters deep. Its banks are 28.1  m above sea level. NHN represents the deepest point in Berlin. To this day, there are still partly unstable and steep underwater embankments, in addition, in the 1970s, partly unknown building material from road and subway construction was backfilled. In addition, the lake is located in the groundwater catchment area of the waterworks in Spandau. This prevented official use as a swimming lake until 2016. Nevertheless, the water was used by the residents as a recreational area. The Senate therefore decided to make official use of the site possible in the course of the east and west reconstruction of the city . Such use was confirmed by an expert opinion from 2011. In 2016/17, the bottom of the lake in the bathing bay adjoining the sunbathing area was cleared of rubble and a non-swimmer zone was set up, which is secured against slipping by an underwater wall. New plantings in existing biotopes should improve the water quality.
