The large vase sponge ( Xestospongia testudinaria ) is a type of sponges and belongs to the class of horned silica sponges .

features

The shape of this sponge is usually barrel-shaped and reaches a height of about 20 cm in the tidal range, in deep waters it can reach sizes of more than 2 meters. The diameter is in the range between 10 and 20 cm. The color spectrum of the large vase sponge ranges from shades of brown to pink, with the opening usually being white. It has a deeply furrowed and hard surface. A wide variety of organisms, such as lobsters, shrimps or sea cucumbers, can settle within the sponge.

Occurrence

The Great Vase Sponge is found in the Indo-Pacific , around Indonesia , the Philippines , Australia and Papua New Guinea . They occur both alone and in small groups at a depth of 2–55 meters.

Multiplication

The vase sponges are bisexual, i.e. living beings with male and female gender characteristics and thus belong to hermaphroditism . The zygote develops into a swimming larva that moves freely in the water and eventually settles on the bottom to develop into a new sponge.
