The great black ash beetle ( Hylesinus crenatus ) is a weevil from the subfamily of the bark beetle (Scolytinae). Since it creates its breeding systems in the bark of the host trees, it is counted among the bark breeders.

features

The beetles are 3.6 to six millimeters long and have a black body that narrows at the back. The head is visible from above, the pronotum has no teeth in front, but is covered with short bristle hairs. The front edge is straight, not indented. The basal edge of the elytra is bent up with cusps and interrupted in the middle by the label . The elytra, sloping evenly towards the end, are covered with short bristle hairs, provided with deep notched stripes and grooved on the sides. The belly rises towards the end. The front hips are wide apart. The limbs of the elongated, pointed antennae , covered with three seams and long hair, are not separated, the antennae whip is seven-limbed. The eyes are not kidney-shaped. The antennae and tarsi are colored red.

distribution

The species is common in Europe .

Way of life

Hylesinus crenatus occurs on the common ash ( Fraxinus excelsior ), more rarely on oak ( Quercus ), black walnut ( Juglans nigra ) and common lilac ( Syringa vulgaris ). It colonizes the bark especially of the strong, thick-barked trees. Two-armed mother tunnels (transverse tunnels) are created to lay eggs , in which one arm is often shorter than the other. The length can be up to four centimeters and the width up to five millimeters. The larval ducts are very long with up to 30 centimeters. There is a two-year generation, so the larvae do not hatch until the following year. Flight time is in April and May.
