The Grand Duke of Oldenburg was a cable lay built in 1905 . The ship was operated by the North German submarine cable works .

history

The ship was ordered from the Schichau shipyard in February 1905 and delivered to the Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke in October of that year. It was the successor to Von Podbielski cable layer, which was sold to the Netherlands in the same year and renamed Telegraaf .

During the First World War the ship was in Germany. After the war it was awarded to Italy as booty and given up on August 31, 1919. As Citta di Milano , it laid cables for Italy and was also chartered by the previous owner in 1925. In 1928 she took part as an auxiliary ship in Umberto Nobiles ' north polar expedition. In order to avoid the takeover of the ship by the Wehrmacht after the Italian surrender , the Citta di Milano was sunk on September 18, 1943.

description

The ship had an engine system arranged amidships, which consisted of a double-end and two single-end cylinder boilers and two triple expansion engines . The coal bunkers had a capacity of 590 t. The Grand Duke of Oldenburg was equipped with three cable tanks, two in the foredeck and one in the aft. The cable could be laid over a stern pulley and a bow pulley was used to pull up the cables.
