Great stone graves near Leitzkau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The megalithic graves near Leitzkau were two megalithic Neolithic graves near Leitzkau , a district of Gommern in the district of Jerichower Land , Saxony-Anhalt . Both were probably destroyed in the 18th or 19th century.

location

Grave 1 was in a wood near the Silvitz deserted area in Leitzkau . Grave 2 was west of the Ladeburg windmill.

Research history

One of the plants (No. 1) was documented for the first time by Justus Christianus Thorschmidt , pastor in Plötzky near Gommern at the beginning of the 18th century . Joachim Gottwalt Abel , who was pastor in Möckern between 1755 and 1806, took over his information . Through his own research, he was able to identify another grave. Grave 1 had already disappeared by this time. Abel only left handwritten notes on his research, which were published by Ernst Herms in 1928 . At the time of Herms' investigations, grave 2 was also completely removed.

description

Grave 1

According to Thorschmidt, grave 1 had a "stone circle" that surrounded a hill. Despite this name, it was probably a rectangular barren bed , as Thorschmidt also called other structures "stone circles" that were clearly not round in shape, such as the Vehlitz 1 grave .

Grave 2

Grave 2 had a north-south oriented trapezoidal or triangular barn bed that tapered to the north. When Abel examined it, it still had 18 enclosing stones: eight on the western long side, seven on the eastern long side and three on the southern narrow side. There were no more stones on the northern narrow side. A burial chamber could not be seen. The complex is therefore likely to have been a chamberless giant bed .
