The large stone grave Albertsdorf (also called Alversteen , Alverstein or Alverston ) is an approximately 5500 year old megalithic complex from the Neolithic age in the south of the island of Fehmarn in the Schleswig-Holstein district of Ostholstein in Germany .

A massive capstone and four bearing stones on the two long sides have been preserved. Originally they were covered by a mound of earth, but nothing is left of it.

location

The Alversteen can be visited at any time. It can be found about one kilometer southwest of Albertsdorf am Deich and is now surrounded by bushes and trees, but easily accessible.

history

There used to be numerous megalithic tombs on Fehmarn. However, since they were a disturbing obstacle to agriculture with their artificially piled up hills, almost all of them were removed and the stones were used for other purposes - they were a welcome building material on the stone-poor island of Fehmarn. The Alversteen is located on slightly elevated terrain almost directly on the beach on a relatively flat stretch of coast. Since it was easy to see from the sea, it was used by seafarers as a point of reference when entering the Fehmarn Sound until the construction of the Strukkamphuk lighthouse in 1896 and was not allowed to be removed. To make it even easier to see from the sea, a white cross had been drawn on the cover plate. The Alversteen has been a listed building since 1979 .
