Sagel stone grave

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The large stone grave Sagel was a megalithic grave of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near the now desolate place Sagel south of Rothenmoor , a district of Dahmen in the Rostock district ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ).

location

The exact location of the grave is not known. It is only generally indicated as "on one of the heights of the Sagel field mark". Just a few hundred meters away to the northeast near Rothenmoor was another large stone grave called Rothenmoor . The next preserved grave is the large stone grave Basedow 2 located about 2-3 km to the northeast .

description

The large stone grave was examined by Albrecht von Maltzahn around 1843 with the intention of restoring it. However, it was later completely removed at a point in time that was not known. The burial chamber still consisted of five wall stones that protruded about 3 feet (almost 1 m) from the earth. It can therefore be referred to as an extended dolmen . Some of the wall stones were shifted, the capstone had slipped. No further information is available about the alignment and dimensions of the chamber.

During an investigation, von Maltzahn found the remains of at least two children's burials. The age at death could be determined at around 5 years for one child and around 10 years for the other. Some of the bones appear to have belonged to a third, younger child. Von Maltzahn could not make out any grave goods.
