The Pseudotsuga macrocarpa ( Pseudotsuga macrocarpa ) is a plant from the genus of Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga ). The term "large-fruited Douglas fir", which is also found, is botanically incorrect, since naked samos (gymnosperms) have no fruits and should therefore be avoided.

description

The large-coned Douglas fir is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of about 18 to 30 meters and a trunk diameter ( BHD ) of 100 centimeters. She sees Pseudotsuga menziesii subsp. very similar to glauca . The bark of the branches is smooth or hairy. The needle-shaped leaves are bluish green, (rarely 20 to) usually 25 to 45 millimeters long and 1 to 1.5 millimeters wide.

The large-cone Douglas fir is single-sexed ( monoecious ). The male cones are light yellow. The most striking feature is the thickest in the middle and tapering to both sides of the female cones ; they have a length of 9 to 20 centimeters and a diameter of 4 to 7 centimeters. The seeds are 9 to 12 millimeters long.

Occurrence

The large-coned Douglas fir is native to the mountain slopes of southern California . The species is hardy in Central Europe , but is rarely planted.
