Grooveshark was an online community that made it possible for users to search for music using a search engine , listen to it and, if necessary, upload new music. Around 50 to 60 million songs were accessed by more than 400,000 listeners every month. In April 2009, the average number of listeners grew by two to three percent per day. On January 18, 2012, Grooveshark stopped access from Germany; on April 30, 2015, the service was completely stopped after a comparison with the major labels .

Functions

One of the most striking features of Grooveshark was the so-called “ Grooveshark Radio ”. It should find and suggest similar songs based on songs the user has already heard. Furthermore, the suggested titles could be marked with a “happy” or “disappointed” smiley using a simple evaluation scheme. If the user is satisfied with the suggestions, Grooveshark gives them the option of saving the playlist and calling it up later. However, “ Grooveshark Radio ” also offered a static playlist that was played automatically. The songs contained in this playlist belonged to a certain genre that could be freely selected. There were 26 classifications available.

history

Grooveshark was a service of Escape Media Group Inc (EMG) based in Gainesville, Florida . The EMG was founded in March 2006 by three students from the University of Florida . Sam Tarantino, currently CEO of Grooveshark, had the idea of setting up this service, as he walked past a record store and a sign saying "buy / sell / trade CDs" (in German: "buy / sell / exchange CDs") read and wanted to transfer this attitude to digital music.

Grooveshark started with a beta version in early 2007 and was originally a download portal for paid music. The music was sourced from their proprietary P2P networks . Grooveshark offered a unique payment method where the person who uploaded a song shared part of the total cost of the song.

As of December 2007, EMG had 40 employees, most of them students who lived near the University of Florida .

In 2008, EMG discontinued its paid download service and reorganized itself as an online jukebox, similar in functionality to, for example, the Pandora and Last.fm services .

In October 2009, Grooveshark got a new look: The users could now jump back and forth in the songs.

Access to Grooveshark.com from Germany has been blocked since January 18, 2012 because, according to the statement on the Grooveshark.com website in Germany, the operating costs are too high due to GEMA fees.

On April 30, 2015, the service was also discontinued in the other countries after a comparison with the major labels . The Grooveshark.com domain has also been offline since 2017.

On July 19, 2015, a few weeks after Grooveshark.com closed, co-founder Josh Greenberg was found dead in his apartment. The subsequent autopsy could not unequivocally clarify the cause of death. He was 28 years old.

Legal situation

Grooveshark offered the music uploaded by its users as a stream without concluding corresponding license agreements with the authors or rights holders. In 2009, the music group EMI initiated a lawsuit against the company for this reason, but then concluded a license agreement with Grooveshark. According to German copyright law, Grooveshark was in a legal gray area. In addition, Universal Music Group has filed a lawsuit against Grooveshark to obtain a closure.

On January 18, 2012, Grooveshark discontinued its service in Germany with the reference to "disproportionately high operating costs". Visitors to the website were advised to send a polite message to GEMA if they wanted to reduce the operating costs for providers like Grooveshark. There is also a reference to the alternative, German-born music service simfy on the website . Since January 21, 2012, the mobile website can no longer be reached from Germany. There are now several technical solutions to circumvent this lock. In a press release by GEMA, on the other hand, any contact between the collecting society and Grooveshark has been denied to date and the claim that users from Germany were foreclosed for cost reasons are presented as incorrect.

Grooveshark has been offline on grooveshark.com since April 30, 2015. In the weeks and months that followed, several domains attempted to cling to the success of the original grooveshark.com; Several of them only managed to do this for a few weeks because too many functions were missing.
