Group of Five

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Group of Five (G5) refers to the Conferences Mountain West Conference (MWC), American Athletic Conference (AAC), Mid-American Conference (MAC), Conference USA (CUSA) and the Sun Belt Conference in college football . In contrast to the Power Five Conferences , these had not reserved a place in the Bowl Championship Series . In some cases, the independent teams from BYU , Army , UMass , New Mexico State and Liberty are also counted as part of the Group of Five.

The Group of Five football teams are generally considered to be the weaker ones in the Football Bowl subdivision and are also given less coverage by television networks. The last national title of a Group of Five team was achieved in 1984 by the BYU Cougars . The best Group of Five team will be awarded a place in one of the six bowl games on New Years under the current agreements.

On December 29, 2016 it became known that due to the unrealistic prospects for a national championship, efforts are being made for the Group of Five to hold their own play-offs . Both CBS, NBC and ESPN are said to have expressed an interest in it. However, there is also resistance, especially from the AAC, which fears degradation as a result. Since the College Football Playoffs were launched in 2014, not a G5 team has come close to the top four.
