geography
Geographical location
The pit is located on the left bank of the Lahn , opposite Löhnberg and about one kilometer north of Ahausen on the southwest slope of the Bornberg.
history
After the mining rights to Roteisenstein (hematite) were granted for the first time in 1829, these were given to the Essen company Krupp in 1887 . From 1906 to 1909 this allowed a new, 600 m long tunnel to be driven further north . The iron ore was transported via the Löhnberg train station on the opposite bank of the Lahn. In 1918 a suspension bridge was built that connected the pit directly with Löhnberg train station. In 1927, the iron ore was in a washing plant locally processed . In 1948 the mine was closed and part of the daytime facilities were used as residential buildings. In the operating period from 1906 to 1948, 373,000 t of Roteisenstein were extracted.
Reuse
While the buildings are empty, the works bridge is used as a bicycle and pedestrian bridge.
