The Friederike iron ore mine , or Friederike mine for short, is a former iron ore mine in the Bündheim district in the Lower Saxony town of Bad Harzburg .

Location and geology

The mining area was located on the immediate northern edge of the Harz, west of Bad Harzburg city center. Geologically, the mining area was characterized by marine-sedimentary oolithic iron ores, along with other minerals such as goethite and limonite .

history

Current use: Mann + Hummel branch on the former mine site

After the mining engineer Wilhelm Castendyck found profitable ore deposits in the Harzburg area at the end of the 1850s, the Friederike mine was founded shortly thereafter. The production initially took place in open-cast mining and was later expanded to include civil engineering . The mine was closed in 1963.

Todays use

After the abandonment, the old dumps were leveled and the mine buildings demolished. A game reserve was set up on the site and the Mann + Hummel company established itself on the northern edge. A hunt was set up reminiscent of the Friederike mine.
