The Phönix mine is a former non-ferrous metal ore mine in the Bensberg ore district southeast of Niedergrützenbach . In the old documents, the location of the Phönix pit is called Untergrützenbach . This place name was changed to Niedergrützenbach in 1892.
The awarding of the mining area took place on 1 September 1854, the company Viktor Bailly & Co. on lead, copper, iron and zinc ores. It was built on the so-called onyx corridor. In 1863 W. Meurer from Cologne became the new operator. At that time, the fifth underground level was being built at a depth of 145 m . In 1879 it was consolidated with the Nikolaus mine to form the new Nikolaus-Phönix mine .
