Gruber & Maklar (official spelling; also: Duo Gruber Maklar ) are a German guitar duo , consisting of the two concert guitarists Christian Gruber and Peter Maklar.

Career

Christian Gruber and Peter Maklar were born in 1965 and 1964 respectively and grew up in different parts of Bavaria. As teenagers they started playing guitar and independently made the decision to study music. At Augsburg Leopold Mozart Conservatory (now Leopold Mozart Center ) with Helmut Hehl They met and founded in 1985 the duo. In addition to Augsburg, they studied together at the Mannheim University of Music with Walter Schumacher-Löffler.

In 1991 Gruber & Maklar took part in the renowned duo competition “Concours international de guitare en duo” in Montélimar , France, and won first prize. This success marked the beginning of a worldwide concert career that has taken stops in many countries. Particularly noteworthy are appearances at the Manhattan School of Music in New York (in 2000) and in Moscow's Tchaikovsky Hall (2007).

repertoire

Although Gruber & Maklar can offer a wide repertoire that includes all epochs of guitar music, they are mainly known for their interpretations of works from the Spanish Romantic period , in particular by Isaac Albéniz , Enrique Granados and Manuel de Falla . Many pieces from her repertoire - u. a. by the aforementioned Spanish composers, as well as Domenico Scarlatti - were originally written for piano and transcribed by the duo for their own purposes.

Various artist partnerships that the duo maintains are also successful: Gruber & Maklar Trio play with the Darmstadt guitarist Tilman Hoppstock , and they continue to make music together with the Chilean singer Maria Cecilia Toledo and the violinist Key-Thomas Märkl from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra . With the news anchor Alex Dorow, the duo will perform in the context of “musical fairy tales for children and adults” and other harmonies of music and language. Composers such as the Serbian-American guitarist Dušan Bogdanović , the Bulgarian Atanas Ourkouzounov and the German film composer Enjott Schneider have written pieces for the duo.

Others

  • Gruber & Maklar have released six CDs so far, mainly with Spanish, South American and contemporary music.
  • The duo has published some of their own transcriptions with the Canadian publisher “Doberman-Yppan”.
  • In many cases Gruber & Maklar were recorded and broadcast by broadcasters (BR, SWR, HR and ORF).
  • The duo received a scholarship from the “ Villa Musica Mainz” foundation and was supported by Yehudi Menuhin's “ Live Music Now ”.
  • A collaboration with the “Hermann Hauser Guitar Foundation” gave Gruber & Maklar performances with historical instruments made by the Munich-based guitar maker Hermann Hauser .
  • Christian Gruber has been organizing a biannual guitar festival in his hometown of Landsberg since 2008 .
