Tilman Hoppstock (* 1961 in Darmstadt ) is a German concert guitarist , cellist and musicologist.

He studied both guitar and cello in Darmstadt and Cologne. Since then he has undertaken extensive concert tours that have taken him to over 40 countries. He became known to a wider audience through over 30 CD recordings. In addition to his solo activity, he often appears as a chamber music partner in various ensembles, including a. with the tenor Christoph Prégardien , with whom he received the German Record Critics' Prize in 1999 . He worked for concerts as well as record and television recordings. a. with the Rubio string quartet, the pianist Alexis Weissenberg , the guitar duo Gruber & Maklar and the baroque cellist Rainer Zipperling .

He followed invitations to music festivals in Europe and overseas and was visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

In 1994 Tilman Hoppstock founded PRIM music publishing, which has so far published over 120 editions for guitar. The musicological sheet music edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's lute works , published by the same publisher, is now considered a standard work for guitarists. In 2009 and 2012 the first two volumes of a three-volume book edition on “Bach's Lute Works from the Guitarist's View” (Vol. 1, Suites BWV 995 & 996, Vol. 2, BWV 998-1000) were published. In 2010 and 2013, PRIM-Verlag published their translations into English. His Urtext edition of works by the Mexican composer Manuel María Ponce (1882–1948), published by Schott in 2006, also received great attention .

Since 1998 he has been organizing the Darmstadt Guitar Days he founded , which took place for the 20th time in 2019.

Hoppstock taught from 1985 to 2007 at the Musikhochschule in Mainz and has been a lecturer at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt since 1988 . From 2003 to 2005 he was visiting professor at the University of Piteå (Sweden).

In 2013 he received the Darmstadt Music Prize .

In 2014, Hoppstock received his doctorate in philosophy with his dissertation on the polyphony in Bach's lute fugues .
