Group 11

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The artist group Gruppe 11 was founded from an association of (former) students from the Stuttgart Art Academy , which came together more closely from 1954 in order to be able to work and exhibit together.

Group 11 was founded on August 11, 1956 by Günther C. Kirchberger , Georg Karl Pfahler , Friedrich Sieber and Attila Biro .

During their time at the academy, the members of the group initially orientated themselves on models of classical modernism such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque as well as the abstract painting of Willi Baumeister . Through Günther C. Kirchberger, who studied in London for a few months in 1956, the members of the group came into contact with international trends in Action Painting and Informel . From the mid-1950s there were also close contacts to the Stuttgart group / school around Max Bense and later also to Helmut Heißenbüttel .

" ... - our most pressing goal was to go abroad as quickly as possible. And not because we didn't appreciate our country enough, we wanted to find the standards, to compare ourselves with international developments, from which the Germans were cut off for so long by the Nazi regime. It was possible most intensively in London ”. (Peter Iden in: Ingrid Mössinger and Beate Ritter (Eds.): Georg Karl Pfahler, p. 28)

In April 1959 the group disbanded as such, everyone went their own artistic ways. All members remained in contact with the Stuttgart group.
