description

Grusonia marenae grows as a shrub with upright, richly branched shoots and reaches heights of 15 to 60 centimeters. The older shoots are lignified, the roots bulbous. The glossy green, tuberous shoots, not divided into sections, are slender cylindrical, up to 20 centimeters long and have a diameter of 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters. The circular areoles measure 3 millimeters in diameter and are covered with very small glochids and a few needle-like thorns . The awl, green or reddish purple-colored leaf rudiments are up to 1 centimeter long and onion-shaped thickened at their base. The lower dark thorns are directed downwards and thickened in an onion shape at their base. The remaining seven to twelve thorns are needle-shaped and lie on the surface of the shoot. They are 0.3 to 1 centimeter long.

The whitish flowers appear terminal and are sunk into the tip of the shoot. They reach lengths of 6 to 8 centimeters. The dry, laterally tearing fruits ripen in the swelling tip of the shoot.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Grusonia marenae is distributed in the Mexican state of Sonora along the coastal areas on the Gulf of California .

It was first described as Opuntia marenae in 1936 by Sidney H. Parsons . Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in the genus Grusonia in 1999 . Synonyms are Marenopuntia marenae (SHParsons) Backeb. (1950) and Pterocactus marenae (SHParsons) GDRowley (1958).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. low risk led. The species is threatened by the use of the distribution areas by planned and existing shrimp farms . The development of the population is seen as decreasing.
