Grusonia parishii is a species of plant in the genus Grusonia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet parishii honors the American botanist Samuel Bonsall Parish (1838–1928).

description

Grusonia parishii grows low, is richly branched and forms mats 10 to 20 centimeters high. The club-shaped, humped shoot sections are 5 to 9 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. The circular areoles are covered with gray to white wool and yellow glochids , which are 5 to 8 millimeters long. The 14 to 22 white to brown thorns have a yellowish tip and are only found on the areoles near the shoot tips or on all areoles. The approximately five upper thorns are brownish, spreading, somewhat round, angular to somewhat flattened at their base and 4.2 inches long. The five to six lower thorns are whitish to slightly pink to ocher, strongly bent back, flattened and 2.5 to 4.5 centimeters long.

The light yellow flowers have a reddish central stripe and reach lengths of 1.5 to 2.2 centimeters. The yellow fruits are fleshy and covered with dense, yellow glochids. They are 3.5 to 5.5 inches long and 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Grusonia parishii is common in the United States in southeastern California , southern Nevada, and northwestern and southern Arizona in the vegetation of the Mojave Desert and Chihuahua Desert at altitudes of 900 to 1200 meters.

It was first described as Opuntia parishii in 1896 by Charles Russell Orcutt . Donald John Pinkava placed the species in the genus Grusonia in 1999 . A synonym is Corynopuntia parishii (Orcutt) FMKnuth (1936).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
