Buildings

In the main street called Caminho da Igreja - the name means "church path" in German - next to an araucaria visible from afar, the parish church Igreja de Nossa Senora de Guadalupe , construction of which began in 1713, rises . Due to a series of tremors in 1717 that lasted for a week, construction came to a standstill and was then resumed and interrupted several times. Only 43 years after construction began, the church was consecrated in 1756 and renovated at the beginning of the 20th century. In the three-aisled church with its two side chapels and two sacristies, which is also known for its ceiling paintings from 1940/41, is the largest altar on the entire island at 9.69 m high and 5.52 m wide. Opposite the parish church is the Imperio de Guadalupe , a chapel of the Holy Spirit from 1896. In the main street there are several residential buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries that are listed buildings. Several windmills have also been preserved.

particularities

After the earthquake of 1717, the people of Guadalupe swore to honor St. Maria regularly conduct a procession. This custom continues today, and since the 1980 earthquake more people have participated than before.
