The Guangdong Olympic Stadium ( Chinese 广东奥林匹克体育中心 , Pinyin Guǎngdōng Àolínpǐkè Tǐyù Zhongxin ) is a multifunctional stadium with an athletics track in the Chinese city of Guangzhou in the province of Guangdong .
history
The stadium was originally intended to be the main site for the 2008 Olympic Games . Ultimately, however, the Beijing National Stadium , also known as the "Bird's Nest" , was built for the Games. The facility, which opened in 2001, currently offers 80,012 seats for visitors; which are 95% covered. The undulating curved roof construction is modeled on the course of the Pearl River , on which Guangzhou lies. It has an area of 32,000 square meters and a weight of 9,500 tons. Sports facilities for soccer , athletics , equestrian sports , archery , baseball , softball and hockey are located around the stadium . In the stadium there are u. a. Shops, restaurants, a hotel with 100 rooms and 100 private suites.
The first event was the National Games of the People's Republic of China in 2001; which opened on November 11th. In 2009, the Asian Athletics Championships made a stop at the sports facility. The stadium served as the main venue for the 2010 Asian Games and the 2010 Para-Asian Games with opening and closing ceremonies. The stadium is mainly used for football matches by teams from the region.
English football teams came to the stadium for friendly matches.
