Guastatoya (also El Progreso ) is a city in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the department El Progreso and the municipality ( Municipio ) of Guastatoya, which covers 262 km² and has about 20,000 inhabitants.

Location and climate

The city is located about 75 km northeast of Guatemala City at an altitude of 515 m. You can reach Guastatoya via the trunk road to the Atlantic (CA 9). Guastatoya is located just before the start of the Motagua Valley on the Río Sanarate (or Río Guastatoya). The climate is dry and hot, with temperatures between 24 and 39 ° C. More than 44 rainy days a year are unusual.

In addition to the capital, the municipality consists of the 16 rural communities ( Aldeas ) El Naranjo, Casas Viejas, Anshagua, Santa Lucía, Corral Viejo, El Barreal, San Rafael, Las Morales, Santa Rita, Tierra Blanca, Patache, Chilzapote, Lagunetas, Palo Amontonado , El Obraje and El Subinal.

Adjacent municipalities are Morazán in the north, San Agustín Acasaguastlán in the northeast, El Jícaro in the east, Sansare in the south and Sanarate in the west.

Economy and tourism

Tourism is of minor importance. The city benefits somewhat from through traffic on the nearby trunk road. Since the parallel railway line to the Atlantic was recently only used for freight traffic, Guastatoya's station is no longer in operation. However, there are plans to resume rail traffic for tourist purposes. In the city is the central park ( Parque Central ) , which is well worth seeing . There are five water parks ( balnearios ) in the area.

history

In the colonial times, the village at that time belonged to the Corregimiento de Chiquimula . In 1873 it came to the Jalapa Department . After the El Progreso Department was founded in 1908 , Guastatoya became its capital. The attempts to rename Guastatoya after the name of the department have de facto failed. The name "El Progreso (Guastatoya)" can be found on various maps.
