Sansare is a town with around 3,500 inhabitants and a municipality in the Department of El Progreso in Guatemala . It is located about 70 km northeast of Guatemala City and 20 km southwest of Guastatoya at an altitude of 790 m. The place is on the national road 19, which branches off in Monte Grande near Sanarate from the Atlantic trunk road CA 9 to the southeast and leads to Jalapa and Jutiapa .
The 118 km² municipality extends in the southern hill country of El Progreso. It has a total of around 13,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom live in rural settlements and villages, including Buena Vista, El Aguaje, El Llano, Estación Jalapa, La Montañita, Las Cabezas, La Trinidad, Los Cerritos, Poza Verde, Quebrada Grande, Río Grande Arriba, Río Grande Abajo, San Felipe Las Tablas, Santa Bárbara and El Juez.
Adjacent Municipios are Guastatoya in the north and Sanarate in the west. Sansare borders the Jalapa department in the south and east .
The Municipio Sansare belonged to the Department of Guatemala until 1872 and to Jalapa until 1908.
