Wilhelm Plüschow (also Guglielmo Plüschow or misleading von Plüschow ; * August 18, 1852 in Wismar , † January 3, 1930 in Berlin) was a German photographer who lived temporarily in Italy and was best known for his nude photographs . His works are similar to those of his cousin Wilhelm von Gloeden and have often been ascribed to him.

Life

Plüschow was born in Wismar as the oldest of seven siblings in the Plüschow family. His father Friedrich Carl Eduard Plüschow was an illegitimate son of the Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig zu Mecklenburg , who gave the child the name of his summer residence Schloss Plüschow (and not, as is often read, von Plüschow). The aviator Gunther Plüschow is a nephew of Wilhelm Plüschow.

Around 1870 Wilhelm Plüschow moved to Rome , where he preferred the Italian form of his first name "Guglielmo". At first he earned his living as a wine merchant , but he soon turned to professional nude photography . Later he also worked in Naples . Here he carried out a series of commissioned works, including photographs of Nino Cesarini , the lover of Baron Jacques d'Adelswärd-Fersen on his estate, the Villa Lysis on Capri .

In 1902, Plüschow was charged with seducing minors and sentenced to eight months in prison. Another scandal followed in 1907, and in 1910 Plüschow had to leave Italy and returned to Germany, where he settled in Berlin .
